The EU-STEP project

EU-STEP is a three-year EU-funded project which aims to improve the visibility of European Higher Education throughout the world and to promote Europe as a centre of excellence in learning, so as to strengthen its dynamic character and foster opportunities of collaboration and exchange between European and third country HEIs. Direct beneficiaries are policy-makers and university leaders from Australia, Latin America and the United States, involved in six European study tours. The project will also benefit the European HEIs involved and networks in Higher Education.

European Higher Education is undergoing major transformations. Launched in 1999, the Bologna Process is a unique model in the world of a major reform in Higher Education. Worldwide, it is much spoken about, yet all its components are often not sufficiently understood, leading to misinterpretations which impact on the collaboration between HEIs and opportunities for exchange of students and staff. While Europe is seen as an entity in general terms and as an economic union, when it comes to cultural aspects and higher education, it is often seen as a multitude of different countries with different national systems.

Activities & outputs

  • Six highly specialized European study tours for third country policy-makers and university leaders:

In the three years of the project duration, project partners will design six one-week study-tours to Europe, taking groups of 25 university decision-makers and policy-makers from HEIs in Australia, Latin America and the United States to Brussels (Belgium), Valencia (Spain) and Glasgow (United Kingdom).

The tours will focus on key EU priority policies and their impact (curriculum reforms, governance, quality performance indicators, university-enterprise cooperation, regional innovation, equity) and their implementation in HEIs, in specific national and regional contexts.
